Changing to LED can reduce energy use and maintenance, but a successful replacement requires more than matching the bulb base. Use these questions to evaluate the complete application.
Does the base match exactly?
Confirm the full base designation, not just its general appearance. Similar screw, pin and twist-lock bases may differ in size, spacing or electrical arrangement. Never modify pins or force a lamp into a socket.
Is the voltage correct?
Check the lamp and fixture labels. A 12-volt lamp is not a substitute for a 120-volt lamp, even when both use the same base. Low-voltage lamps may also depend on a compatible transformer or LED driver.
Will the lamp physically fit?
LED replacements can be wider or longer than the lamps they replace because of their electronics and heat-management components. Measure the available fixture space, including shade, trim and socket depth. Confirm that the lamp will not press against a cover or block ventilation.
Is it approved for an enclosed fixture?
Heat can shorten LED life and affect performance. If the lamp will operate inside a sealed or poorly ventilated fixture, select a product specifically rated for that use. An LED’s low wattage does not mean it produces no heat.
Is it suitable for the location?
Check whether the product is rated for dry, damp or wet locations. Outdoor fixtures may also expose lamps to heat, insects, salt air, vibration and moisture. The fixture’s own environmental rating remains important.
Is dimming required?
The lamp must be labelled dimmable, and the dimmer must be compatible with the lamp. An incompatible combination may flicker, buzz, drop out, fail to reach full output or have a limited dimming range. Manufacturer compatibility information is more reliable than assuming that all LED dimmers and lamps work together.
Is a transformer, ballast or driver involved?
Low-voltage spots, fluorescent replacements, HID replacements and specialised lamps may operate through control gear. Confirm the exact transformer, ballast or driver model and review the LED manufacturer’s compatibility list. A product that fits the socket may still be unsuitable for the control gear.
What light output is needed?
Compare lumens, not only replacement wattage claims. For reflector lamps, also compare beam angle and centre-beam performance. A narrow beam can appear intense in one area while leaving the surrounding space darker.
What colour appearance is required?
Match the desired Kelvin value and review CRI when colour quality matters. If the lamp will sit beside existing lighting, use a consistent product specification to reduce visible differences.
Will it work with controls?
Photocells, motion sensors, timers, emergency circuits and smart controls can introduce minimum-load, leakage-current or switching requirements. Confirm compatibility with both the lamp and the complete control system.
Is the product suitable for the fixture’s thermal and electrical limits?
Do not exceed the fixture’s maximum wattage or ignore manufacturer restrictions. Check ambient-temperature limits, orientation requirements and any warnings against use in specific fixture types.
Has the replacement been tested in the actual application?
For commercial projects, test a sample before purchasing a large quantity. Observe start-up, flicker, dimming, colour consistency, physical fit, glare and operating temperature. A small trial can reveal compatibility issues before they affect the full installation.
