Voltage is one of the most important specifications on a lamp. Installing a product at the wrong voltage can cause failure, unstable operation, overheating or a serious safety concern. Always match the lamp to the electrical system and fixture requirements.

The base does not determine voltage

A common mistake is to assume that every lamp with a particular base operates at the same voltage. Base standards describe the physical connection, but manufacturers can produce lamps with similar bases for different systems and markets.

Read the voltage printed on the original lamp, replacement product and fixture label. If the figures do not agree, stop and investigate.

Line-voltage and low-voltage lighting

Line-voltage lamps connect to the building supply through an appropriate fixture. Low-voltage lamps operate at a reduced voltage provided by a transformer or driver. Common low-voltage lighting includes some capsule lamps, MR lamps, display lighting and specialised equipment.

The presence of a 12V lamp means there is usually equipment converting the supply voltage. That equipment has its own output type, load range and compatibility requirements.

AC, DC and electronic outputs

Voltage alone may not describe the full power requirement. A lamp can be designed for alternating current, direct current or a specific electronic transformer. Two products labelled 12V may behave differently if one requires AC and the other DC.

LED replacements contain electronic components and may not operate correctly with every older transformer. Possible symptoms include flicker, pulsing, buzzing, failure to start or failure to dim. Check the lamp manufacturer’s transformer and dimmer compatibility information.

Minimum-load problems

Some transformers and dimmers were designed for higher-wattage halogen loads. Replacing several halogen lamps with low-wattage LEDs may reduce the connected load below the equipment’s operating range. Even though each LED is labelled with the correct nominal voltage, the system may become unstable.

The correct solution may involve a compatible LED lamp, a compatible transformer or driver, a different dimmer, or a properly designed fixture conversion. It should not be solved by randomly increasing wattage or mixing lamps.

What overvoltage can do

Applying voltage above a lamp’s rating can overstress filaments, electronics, insulation and internal components. A lamp may fail immediately or experience a shortened life. The absence of immediate failure does not prove that the installation is acceptable.

What undervoltage can do

Traditional incandescent lamps may operate dimly at reduced voltage, while electronic lamps may flicker, cycle or fail to start. Drivers and ballasts often have defined input ranges. Operation outside those limits can be unpredictable.

Voltage in commercial and specialised applications

Commercial properties may contain more than one supply voltage, especially across imported equipment, machinery, emergency systems and older installations. Medical, projection, stage, scientific and automotive lamps can have highly specific requirements.

For these applications, use the equipment manual, manufacturer part number and existing lamp code. A visually similar substitute can be unsuitable even when its wattage and base match.

A safe replacement checklist

Before installation, confirm:

  1. Lamp voltage and permitted range
  2. AC, DC or other operating requirement
  3. Fixture supply voltage
  4. Transformer, ballast or driver model
  5. Dimmer and control compatibility
  6. Correct base and dimensions
  7. Maximum fixture wattage
  8. Product instructions and location rating
